The Sligo senior football team have won three Connaught titles all achieved nearly 50 years apart in 1928, 1975 and 2007. Sligo have never appeared in an All-Ireland SFC final, The 1922 Championship is the closest they have come, defeating Roscommon, Mayo and Galway to win the Connacht title, and beating Tipperary in the subsequent All-Ireland semi-final that followed. However, “a flimsy technicality” led to a replay of the Connacht final against Galway, which Sligo lost. A feature of the more recent sporting experience in Sligo has been the growth of ladies’ football. First organised in 1993, the Sligo women’s footballers lifted their first All-Ireland junior title in 2006, while in 2008 the county’s hurlers added a Nicky Rackard Cup. Like to add something?
